Employment Opportunity

Dear Friends,

This is the third consecutive column devoted to the implementation of our parish Strategic Plan. Last week I talked about the Communication and Relationship Building goal and shared the new branding or logo for Saint Margaret Parish.

Today I am turning to another goal, Facility Advancement.
This goal states: “Saint Margaret Parish will provide proper facilities that are sustainably developed, managed and maintained to support the faith, community, and ministerial mission of the parish.”  The major objective for fulfilling this goal is “To develop a 20-year Master Plan for both campuses [Saint Margaret and Saint Mary Magdalen] focusing on 1) Physical space usage and needs [for] education, worship, and ministries, 2) Clergy residence, and 3) Parking.”  I am pleased to say that this objective has been accomplished. This Master Plan is based on a professional study of our facilities, properties and needs. It foresees three phases of work spread out over the next nine years. We are now beginning to address phase one which includes the following projects.

4We want to do some enhancements to the interior of the Callahan Center. No question, this must continue as a multi-function building. Nevertheless, its main weekly purpose is for two Sunday Masses and we want to enhance the sacredness of this setting. This study/plan will include: a tabernacle for the reservation of the Eucharist, liturgical art, enlargement of the platform/sanctuary area, and possibly the addition of screens for audio-visual presentations. These ideas originated from a consultation last fall with interested parishioners who regularly attend Mass at Saint Mary Magdalen. We are now interviewing a professional liturgical designer recommended by the Archdiocese to assist us with this.
4We want to try to add parking to Saint Margaret’s. We are looking at removing a small ranch house owned by the parish adjacent to the rear parking lot, doing a professional plan and marking of the current parking lot and then extending it onto the site presently occupied by the house and its lawn. We are advised that we might be able to gain as many as 41 parking spaces. In doing this, we will have to abide by storm water management requirements. We will utilize a professional recommended by the Archdiocese to assist with this.
4We need to repair and enhance signage on both properties. This will include the street signs, directional signs for locating buildings, and identification signs for each building on both properties.
4The last part of phase one of the Master Plan, to be done only after the above are accomplished, is a thorough study of the needs of Saint Margaret church. Our church is forty years old and some of the focuses of the study are: roofing, the creation of a gathering space, better lighting in hallways and all walk areas, upgrading of restrooms, reconfiguring the entire Confessional/Reconciliation Room spaces, enhancement of the shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the left of the sanctuary, etc.

Obviously, all of the above will cost money. We will study all projects carefully, act prudently, and definitely keep all of you fully informed and consulted as we progress.

May we all have a happy Fourth of July and thank God for the freedom and many blessings that we have here in the United States.

If you think that "kids are going to drink anyway." remember that Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.40% is considered a lethal dose (onset of coma and possible death due to respiratory arrest can occur).

IT’S VACATION TIME!

Going fishing?  A golf outing?  Heading to the beach?
Have a good time. Keep safe and healthy. We pray that your vacation will be pleasant and restful.

Before you go, why not use your offertory envelopes for those weeks that you’ll be on vacation?  Send them in before you go and you’ll know you are helping the parish meet our bills that must be paid each week. Contributing through Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) is also an easy way to make sure you don’t miss contributing to the parish. EFT forms are available on the parish website [ HERE ], and at the doors of the building.

SERVICES FOR INFANTS AND CHILDREN
In an effort to accommodate parents with infants and young children, our parish provides the following services:

4 Baby changing stations are located in the handicap accessible restrooms

4 Nursery service for children up to 3 years of age is provided in the Pre-school building (next to the church) during the 9 am and 10:30 am Masses at Saint Margaret and during the 9:30 am and 11 am Masses at Saint Mary Magdalen.

4 The sound system extends into the cry room and lobby area for parents when their little ones need a “breather”.

PARISH INTENTION BOOK

We would like to keep your intentions in our prayer and Mass intentions. There is an intention book in both the Church and the
Mission Center for you to write your intentions. As a community of faith, we pray for those intentions at every Mass.

MATCHING GIFT PROGRAMS
Many corporations have a Matching Gift Program where they will match your gift or donation. This match can double or even triple your donation at no extra cost to you. If you or your spouse work for a matching gift company, please consider having your donation matched by the employer. Participation is easy. Contact your employer and

1.   Ask your employer if they support a Matching Gift Program. Saint Margaret Parish is a 501(c) (3) corporation.

2.   Obtain a Matching Gift form from your employer’s human resources or payroll department.

3.   Complete the donor section of the form and send it to Saint Margaret Parish, 141 N. Hickory Avenue , Bel Air, Maryland   21014 according to your employer’s guidelines.

Some companies may not donate specifically to a church but will donate to a school or program in the Parish, such as outreach to the needy, homeless shelter, etc. For more information, please call Karen Saccenti , (410) 879-2670, ext 112 or email ksaccenti@stmargaret.org .

What Does America Mean?

The word "America" does not mean a member of any certain race who belongs to any certain church or votes any certain political ticket. It is the most inclusive national name there has ever been. It means black, white, brown, yellow; it means Christian, Jew, atheist, living together and working toward the common good while preserving the rights of an individual.

Dear Friends,

Today is the second in a series of columns designed to bring you up-to-date on the implementation of the parish Strategic Plan. Last weekend I reviewed the Vision and Mission Statements which are the foundation of a Strategic Plan. Built on those statements are six major goals:

1) Living in the Lord
2) Leadership, Mentoring and Engagement
3) Facility Advancement
4) Finance and Development
5) Communication and Relationship Building
6) Organization.

Today I am focusing on # 5.

The Communication and
Relationship Building goal states: “Saint Margaret Parish will build relationships by enhancing internal communication and creatively conveying the Good News of our caring, accessible, faith-filled community to the parish and beyond.”  There are four objectives attached to this goal and the very first calls for “a bold, creative formal branding initiative for Saint Margaret Parish.”  If you are like me, you might be asking: what is “branding”?

The understanding that I have learned is that branding is a process of being clear about our core identity and core values and then being consistent in communicating these characteristics. In a way, the branding project was simple after we agreed on our Vision and Mission Statements (reviewed last week).  In the branding project, we focused on our core identity as “Saint Margaret Parish…centered in the Eucharist.”  This brand gets represented in a logo. We are very fortunate in having professionals in our parish who do branding, logos, and marketing. One parishioner led this process and donated his time and expertise in developing a new logo to represent our parish. Here it is:

The S and M of the logo obviously speak of Saint Margaret Parish. Notice that the interior of the M is designed with the image of a chalice and host, representing the Eucharist. We will use this logo on all printed and electronic communications and in all ministries of our parish, including the school. The logo and printed identification of the parish beneath it speak of our unity as one parish. Whenever possible in our communications, we will also note our two locations: Saint Margaret Church on Hickory Avenue and Saint Mary Magdalen Mission on Churchville Road .

Now that this branding project is complete, you will see a number of other communications projects follow rather rapidly.
We have already re-designed stationery and will phase this in over time, as old stationery gets used. We will have a re-designed bulletin by the end of the summer. We will develop a new web-page for our website. And we will now proceed to upgrade and add signage for both properties and for the buildings on both properties.

Next week I will continue with the update on the implementation of our Strategic Plan.

Archbishop's Annual Appeal

Telephone follow-up begins
The telephone follow-up phase of the 2009 Archbishop's Appeal will begin on June 16, 2009 and will continue through the end of July 2009. This is a very important element of the Annual Appeal. It provides an opportunity for those who may have missed the Appeal mailings or the in-pew process to make a pledge or a one-time gift to this year's Appeal. Last year, this phase of the campaign produced pledges of $150,000 from 1,077 Archdiocesan households. Please keep in mind that in addition to helping to supporting Archdiocesan ministries that serve thousands of people, our parish receives 25% of every dollar contributed up to our parish goal and 50% of every dollar paid after we reach our goal. The parish staff and Appeal Committee thank all of those who have already contributed and encourage those who are contacted by phone to make a generous pledge to the 2009 Archbishop's Annual Appeal.

He calms all our storms
Don’t be afraid of the trials which God may see fit to send to you. God uses the wind and storm of tribulation to separate the true wheat from the chaff.  When you are buffeted by sorrow’s rains, tragedy’s thunder or lightening burn of affliction, remember God is there in the storm, holding you in the palm of His hand.  And cradled in His loving grasp, you will find the true calm your heart needs, the still, sweet center of your faith.  Isn’t that peace worth the storm?

Leave things the way you found them
Summer is the time for vacationing and many people will seek a refuge from the normal routine of their lives by spending time in the forests and wilderness of our great country. What better time to stand in awe of the handiwork of God; the crystal clear mountain streams, the giant redwoods, the breath – taking sunsets. Such sights can only serve to further impress good Christians with the true responsibilities of stewardship.  We must, at all times, remember that we are stewards of the earth and its resources. So, this summer if you come into contact with nature, be a good steward, do your best to leave things in the same wonderful state you find them.

Dear Friends,

Today I am beginning a series of bulletin columns on our parish Strategic Plan. You probably recall that Saint Margaret’s completed a major Strategic Plan last August. It was the result of eighteen months of work that involved forty-five parishioners working on six special committees and about a thousand other parishioners involved in various forms of consultation. Since the announcement and mailing of the Plan to all parish families in September 2008, a Shepherding Committee has been meeting once a month to oversee its implementation. The purpose of this and subsequent columns is to give a thorough update on the implementation of the Plan.

It is important first to recall the Vision Statement of the Plan.
A vision statement is to be a brief, compact expression of what purpose we want to fulfill in the long-term and is underneath all the specific things we do. Our Parish Vision Statement consists of only eight words: “Seeking a world transformed and unified in Christ.”  We are seeking, working for, responding to the grace and promptings of the Holy Spirit to bring the kingdom of God more fully present on this earth.  We seek a world transformed by the presence and way of Christ.  We seek a world that will in that way be unified in Christ.  We see our work and ministry here at Saint Margaret’s in the context of this big picture. No matter how insignificant some of what we do seems, it is all to be part of “Seeking a world transformed and unified in Christ.”

If the Vision Statement expresses our vision, our ultimate and long-term purpose, the
Mission Statement of the Plan describes how we see ourselves doing this.  It is a kind of summary of how we are going to pursue the vision. Our Mission Statement says:

“Saint Margaret Parish of Bel Air, Maryland is a multi- generational Roman Catholic Community centered in the Eucharist and committed to learning, loving, and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

We are “a multi-generational community.”  We have a wonderful mix of all age groups – children, teens, young adults, mid-lifers, and seniors. This brings a certain diversity and mix of experience that can enhance the faith life of our parish.  We are a “Roman Catholic community.”  We are not a stand-alone, independent church.  We are part of the Church founded by Jesus Christ and entrusted to St. Peter and his successor, the Pope, and to the other apostles and their successors, the bishops. Our Church has a rich tradition of doctrine that is rooted in the inspired Word of God. This doctrine opens up to us the mystery of God and also guides us in our moral living.  Being a Roman Catholic community also places us in a communion of faith with all others who are united with the bishop of Rome as the successor of Peter.

We are “centered in the Eucharist.”  We believe that God comes to us in the sacred signs that we call sacraments and that the Eucharist is the summit and center of our seven sacraments. And we are also a people of the Word – “committed to learning, loving, and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”  Our very celebration of Mass reflects this commitment to Word and this centeredness in the Eucharist.

Next week I will pick up on a very important project stemming from the Vision and Mission Statements – what is called branding.

Dear Friends,

Last week, in my monthly column on finances, I gave an overview and a few highlights of the parish operating budget for the new fiscal year.
Our fiscal year begins on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2010 . Today I want to focus on extraordinary repairs and capital project expenses.

In the fiscal year that we are now ending, we have spent $159,000 on extraordinary repairs and capital projects.
By the way, we classify as a capital project an expenditure on property, buildings, or equipment of $2,500 or more.  The $159,000 consists of the following:

4  Professional cleaning of the stone of the altar and ambo (pulpit) in Saint Margaret Church and Chapel
4  Professional cleaning, and polishing of the slate floor in Saint Margaret Church
4  Installation of the tabernacle in Saint Margaret Church (this was contributed by a parishioner, but the cost is included in the total expenses above which is a gross amount)
4  Installation of a paved surface pad for the dumpster near the Callahan Center at Saint Mary Magdalen
4  Major repairs to the rectory at Saint Mary Magdalen, including plumbing, electrical, painting, flooring, roofing, and vinyl siding
4  Some additional vestments for both Saint Margaret and Saint Mary Magdalen
4  A folding machine for the parish office

I should add that we were also fortunate to have some projects done this past year as in-kind gifts from parishioners, e.g. repair of the lower roof on Saint Margaret Church and emergency tree removal by parishioners who are professionals.

In fiscal year 2010 which we will begin in a few weeks, we have budgeted $139,000 for extraordinary repairs and capital projects.
This amount includes the following:

4  New carpeting, lighting, and ceiling in the hallway and some other areas of the Primary Education Building
4  Replacement of the entrance door to the Parish Center
4  Installation or upgrading of security systems in the Parish Center, Early Childhood Center, and Elementary Education Building at Saint Margaret, and in the Education Center at Saint Mary Magdalen
4  Some minor liturgical enhancements (banners) in Saint Margaret Church
4  Parking improvements at Saint Margaret campus (will ultimately be a much more costly project, but a beginning of this in the budget) *
4  New signage for Saint Margaret and Saint Mary Magdalen properties and buildings *
4  Liturgical enhancements in the Callahan Center at  Saint Mary Magdalen (flowing from consultation with those attending Mass there) *

The items that have an asterisk (*) are called for by our parish Strategic and/or Master Plan.  I will start to focus more on that in a week or two.  I hope the above is informative.  Please direct any questions or comments to Mary Ellen Bates , the Business Manager, Karen Saccenti , the Assistant Pastor, or me.  As I so often feel, it is a blessing to be the pastor of Saint Margaret Parish.

“Mary”

Oh Mary, Oh Mary, with mercy filled eyes

Who rules the sea, the stars and the sky.
Oh Mary the lion, who accepts the gift
The gift of God’s son and his mercy to lift.
Oh, blessed is she that moves the tide
That said “Yes” to the angels, whom we abide.

The Virgin of Mothers, the Queen of all
Queens

No helpless in hers eyes, is left unseen.
Oh Mother of Heaven and humans of all
That Mary, that Mother that watches Jesus fall.
Without her and love, our Jesus no more
Mary of Jesus that rules through the shore
Said “Yes” to the angel and no to our sin.
Oh, Blessed is she, whom in God has been.
Mary Oh Mary with Mercy filled eyes
Who rules over sea, lands, the stars and the sky.

Dear Friends,

This weekend I am doing the once-a-month update on parish finances.  The topic is the parish budget for fiscal year 2010, beginning July 1, 2009 .

As you know, the parish has a very active Finance Committee.
The Committee consists of seven parishioners skilled in finance, accounting, investment, and business. They meet once a month to review the financial statements which are prepared by the Business Manager and to monitor the entire financial operation of the parish. In April the Committee met twice with various members of the staff to analyze initial proposals for the budget. The Committee finalized the budget on May 16 and our Pastoral Council approved it on May 19. Now let’s look at some of its major features.

4   In view of the serious economic downturn nationally, the Archdiocese recommended that there would be no salary increase for any employees in all parishes, schools, etc.  We abided by that recommendation and thus our parish and school employees are receiving no salary increase in the new fiscal year.

4   The cost of benefits, especially health (+15%) and pension (+12%), is increasing. This hits the employees with higher co-pays on the health side and is challenging, given no salary increase.

4   To assist with this, we have initiated medical and dependent care flex accounts. This means that employees can designate an amount of their income as pre-tax dollars to be placed in a parish account upon which they can draw with appropriate documentation justifying expenses.

4   The Archdiocese recommended that all parishes budget for a 5% reduction in income. We decided to budget income for next year as flat with our income forecasted as of June 30.  You, the parishioners, have been so faithful in your contributions through this troubled economic time that we are confidant in doing this. Thus, we are forecasting total year-end income of $3,020,000 and are budgeting the same amount for fiscal year 2010. That will be our total budget.

4   Certain expenses increase beyond our control, e.g. the employee benefits mentioned above. Given that and given our desire to continue implementing our Strategic Plan, we asked all budget areas to reduce programmatic costs by 5%. In effect, we tried to wring out of the budget anything unnecessary. We have also reduced significantly for this year the amount allocated for professional development (conferences, workshops, etc.). While these are valuable experiences for religious educators, youth ministers, and others, we felt that we had to pull back on these this year.

4   The Strategic Plan calls for adding a Director of Development to the staff. There used to be such a position (part-time), but it was cut four years ago. Those involved in developing the Strategic Plan, the Finance and Development Committees, and the Pastoral Council are all encouraging this move. In a way, the idea is simple. We need a position to help with developing the resources that make the ministry possible. Besides offertory giving, we need to work on other things, such as bequests, testamentary gifts, etc.

I will share more on this budget in a future column.  For now, let me say that your financial contributions to the parish make possible all of the programs and services that happen here. I am very grateful for your generosity. I also request here at the beginning of June that you maintain your regular giving during the summer. Many of you will be away for some weekends and I just ask you to catch up with your offertory giving for the weekends that you miss. Your support is both needed and deeply appreciated.

The Star in the Window

During World War I, families with a son in the war would place a star in the window. A man was walking along with his grandson when his grandson asked, "Why do all these homes have stars in the windows?" The grandfather explained to the son what the star symbolized.

They walked along and every time they passed a home with a star in the window the boy would smile and clap his hands together. Then the boy pointed up to the sky and pointed to a star. "Look," he said. "God must have given his son too!"

Many gave their lives for their country, but God gave his son for the world.

Dear Friends,

The Archdiocese of Baltimore is assigning one of the seminarians to Saint Margaret’s for what is called his Pastoral Year.  Let me first give some background.

The Archdiocese formally accepts a young man as a candidate for priesthood after he has completed college.
Almost always, there is a one-year or even two-year pre-theology program. During this pre-theology experience, the candidate completes any pre-requisite courses that are needed before beginning theological studies and also receives an in-depth introduction to prayer and spirituality.  At the end of pre-theology and upon a successful evaluation, the candidate begins theological studies at one of the seminaries that the Archdiocese uses – Saint Mary’s in Baltimore, Mt. St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, the Theological College at the Catholic University of America in Washington, and the North American College in Rome.  After completing the first two years of theology, the candidate is then assigned to a parish for one year – the Pastoral Year. The purpose of this experience is to give the seminarian a taste of the many dimensions of priestly ministry.  This enables a candidate to grow in his own skills and sense of ministry and to further examine his calling to the priesthood.  It also enables the Archdiocese to discern a candidate’s vocation and identify areas of development that are needed. After completing this pastoral year, the candidate then returns to the seminary for the last two years of theology which will culminate in ordination to the diaconate and then to the priesthood.

Beginning this Monday, June 1, Mr. Steven Roth will be here at Saint Margaret’s.
Steven grew up in Scranton , Pennsylvania with his parents and sister. Steven’s parents still live in Scranton and Steven has been visiting there with his family in these weeks between the closing of school and checking into Saint Margaret’s. Steven attended a Catholic elementary and Catholic high school in Scranton . He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and Theology with a concentration in Catholic studies from the University of Scranton. Following that he earned a Master’s Degree in Community Counseling at the same university.

Steven worked as a professor at the
University of Scranton
in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and also taught at Marywood University. His clinical experience includes working for a practice that specialized in children with psychological and developmental issues. He also worked with the court system to provide evaluations on the stability and wellness of parents and caretakers. While working in these positions, Steven was very active in his home parish, especially in the liturgy.

Steven and I will soon develop a plan for his ministry experience here at Saint Margaret’s.
I suspect this will include almost every area of parish life, including attending Pastoral Council and other meetings, assisting in the youth, religious education, school, and RCIA programs, ministering to the sick and hospitalized, participating in our outreach programs for those in need, assisting in the liturgy, etc. Steven will be here fulltime in residence for fourteen months, from this June 1 to August 1, 2010. I know that you will all give him a warm welcome, so typical from our Saint Margaret’s community.

The ongoing work of the Holy Spirit at Mass: The Epiclesis

On the night Jesus was betrayed, he promised his disciples another advocate. While Jesus was the first advocate, the only Son of God sent to reconcile the world to God the Father, Jesus explained that there would come a day when he would go back to the Father. We celebrated this historical fact last Sunday on the Feast of the Ascension. Fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection, the Holy Spirit was sent down upon the Apostles, some women and Mary the mother of Jesus as they prayed together in the upper room. As St. Luke tells us in the Acts of the Apostles, “When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them” (Acts 2:1-2)  The work of the Holy Spirit was clearly and powerfully visible that day. But more than being visible, it worked in the hearts of all those who were present as the source of unity and love. To this very day, the Holy Spirit continues to be sent upon the Church, upon God’s people. At every Mass, the priest, acting in the person of Christ, calls upon the Holy Spirit through an act called the “Epiclesis.”

The word epiclesis is Greek and means to “invoke upon.”  It is a technical liturgical term referring to the invocation to God the Father imploring him to send the Holy Spirit on the Church’s gifts. If you watch closely, you will know when the epiclesis is occurring when the priest places his hands over the gifts right before the consecration. In describing the epiclesis, Fr. Jeremy Driscoll observes in his book entitled “What Happens at Mass,” “The action of the Holy Spirit here in our liturgy exactly parallels the work of the Holy Spirit in the Incarnation of Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit throughout the entire life of Jesus.  We experience concretely the unveiling of the Trinitarian mystery in our very  midst - concretely because the Spirit sent from the Father now works to transform our gifts into the body and blood of the Son.” (p.87)  Although we do not hear driving winds rush through our church each Sunday, or see tongues of fire resting on our heads, we know through faith that the Holy Spirit is just as active at every Mass as on the day of Pentecost. As the bread and wine are completely transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit, so may we allow that same Holy Spirit to transform us more and more into the likeness of the one we receive.

This was a great idea!  Mrs. Hunter’s fifth grade brought in over 1,000 box tops. Student Achievement Award

Seventh grader Kara Komondor was presented with a Student Achievement Award on May 18th during the Bel Air Town Meeting held in the Town Hall on
Hickory Avenue. This award is designed to highlight the achievements of students attending schools whose student populations are comprised at least partially of residents of the Town of Bel Air .

We choose a seventh grader for the annual award every spring. Teachers are asked to nominate students based on academics, involvement in extra curricular activities, and school citizenship. Kara was selected by her teachers because she more than meets the criteria.  In addition to excelling academically, Kara participates in extra curricular activities.  An honor student, Kara qualifies for the Principal’s List because of her straight A average and has been named a recipient of the middle school Language Arts Award.  She is a member of the Newspaper Club and Beta Club, a Student Council officer, performs musical productions with the Creative Arts Club, and played on the SMS Soccer Team last year. Recently, she represented our school in the Scholympics competition sponsored by the Institute of Notre Dame High School. She was nominated by her teachers to attend the People to People Leadership Forum and spent a week in
Washington recently at the Forum.  A responsible school citizen, Kara is an asset to the school community through her leadership, team work, and desire to be the best she can be.

Memorial Day, May 25th - The Parish Office is Closed

Dear Friends,

This coming Friday evening, May 29th, 90 boys and girls will graduate from the eighth grade of Saint Margaret’s School.
Congratulations to all of the graduates!  I believe that these young people have received an excellent education and also good faith and personal formation for their lives. That is the special and clear mission of our school. These graduates are now well equipped for high school. Of the 90, 74 will be going on to various Catholic high schools, 1 will attend a private high school, and 15 will be going to our fine Harford County public schools. I also want to note that these graduates have been awarded a total of 17 scholarships to various high schools. That says a lot about their talent and a lot about Saint Margaret School also. By the way, 1 other child in Saint Margaret School has won a Marion Knott Scholarship covering all tuition for grades 5 to 8. Congratulations to them and to all of our graduates!

Might you be in a position to enable a child to attend Saint Margaret’s School?
  Let me explain.

The school has an annual operating budget of $4 million and its largest source of income is tuition.
The parish budget assists by providing $100,000 of tuition assistance to families with demonstrated need. The tuition rate for parishioners is $5,000, with a family rate for those with two or more children in our school. No question, even with some tuition assistance, families sacrifice to send their children to Saint Margaret School .

Parish families must apply for the tuition assistance that I mentioned above.
They must submit required documentation to a Tuition Assistance Committee comprised of parishioners and parish staff members. This committee follows well- developed procedures, including the assistance of a national service, in recommending to me as pastor tuition assistance grants. For the next school year, 2009-10, over 50 families have requested assistance. The challenge is that there is not enough tuition assistance in the budget to go around. Some families will receive less than they need and some will receive no grant at all. The result is that in some cases, parents may not be able to afford to send their children to Saint Margaret School next year.  This is where you may enter the picture. Might some of you be able to provide a monetary special gift that would tip the scales, make the difference and enable some parents to send their children to our school?

If you can consider this, here is how it would work.

4  Contact the parish Business Manager, Mary Ellen Bates , the Assistant Pastor, Karen Saccenti , or me here at the parish office.

4  Make your check payable to Saint Margaret Parish with a notation that it is for tuition assistance. This gift will be tax deductible.

4  Your gift must be free and unconditional. You cannot name the child or family to whom you want the gift to apply. The Tuition Assistance Committee will review the families in need and make a recommendation to me on the application of your special gift.

4   We cannot tell you the name of the child whom your gift helped. However, we will give you a general description of how your money was used and the difference it has made.
