Boy Scouts Take On High Adventure

On June 30th ten boys and six adults from Saint Margaret Parish Boy Scout Troop 564 headed off on an adventure of a life time together. The group headed to one of the 3 nationally sponsored Boy Scouts of America high adventure camps at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Here the group will work in smaller teams of 8 each and set out for between 60 and 80 miles of back country back packing between July 2nd and July 12th. Everything they need will be carried on their back and they will need to work together to set up camp each night, find water, prepare meals and stay away from the local inhabitants (bears). Despite the work the Scouts and

Scouters will see some of the beautiful scenery that America’s southwest has to offer, they will summit a 12 thousand foot mountain, go horseback riding, investigate dinosaur tracks, learn to pan for gold and eat a traditional western chuck wagon meal. For the six adults that are going each will get to spend the trip with their son on an adventure they hope both will never forget. The Troop’s Scoutmaster, Greg Yantz, said before they left – “Scouting is about allowing young men to discover leadership, character and most of all how to have fun. This trip will enable the scouts and scouters to experience the full scouting experience.”

Hunger Doesn't Go On Vacation
Please continue to bring in tabbed canned goods, non- perishable food items and gift certificates to Mass each weekend. This is a continuous ministry to the needy of Harford County.

The County Food Bank picks them up every Monday for those in Harford County that are less fortunate. Please place food items at the entrance of the church or Callahan Center and place gift certificates in the collection. You may also drop off items at the parish office. Thank you for helping with this ministry!

Thank You For The Bulletins And Signs!
Many of you have brought copies of the bulletins from churches that you visited while on vacation and told us about messages on church signs. Here are a few signs we’ve heard about.

• Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers.
• It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.
• The Lord didn’t create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close.
Please keep sending in the bulletins and messages you see on church signs. You could also e-mail this to Karen at ksaccenti@stmargaret.org. Thank you!

Introductory sessions will be held on Monday evenings, August 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Saint Margaret church. Music reading ability is helpful, but not essential. If interested, please call the music office. Fall rehearsals will be tentatively scheduled for Monday evenings from 5:15 to 6:00 pm at Saint Margaret church.

From Father Mike
Dear Friends,
Here we are already at the beginning of August and wow, has it ever been a warm summer!
I hope that all of you have had or will have some rest and relaxation in these months.

Today I am repeating a column I wrote at the end of June, knowing that some of you were away then and would not have seen this. The topic is money but do not worry, I am not asking you to give more. We ended the past ministry year (our fiscal year ends on June 30) in financial balance. This is thanks to you, your faith, and your wonderful support of Saint Margaret. I am very grateful to you.

Nevertheless, I do have a request and I can state it simply in one sentence: Please give in the offertory during the summer months what you give each week through the rest of the year to the parish.
I am sure that you readily understand the reason for this request. The ministries of the parish are important and we depend on your support fifty-two weeks a year. The budget is built around that. Therefore, if you have been away or are going away for a weekend or weekends especially in the summer, would you try to make up the contributions that you miss on those weekends either before you leave or after you return? Obviously, you can do this simply by doubling up on your envelopes. Thank you for considering this.

Most parishioners use the traditional envelopes for their contributions.

This is excellent and in fact it is a very visible and tangible expression of the support of our faith during Mass.

I am also enclosing a flyer in this bulletin that includes information and a sign-up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and, in a separate section in this bulletin, you can learn about Online Banking.
Electronic Funds Transfer is an automatic debit program which enables us to make regular offertory contributions to Saint Margaret directly from our account at the bank, without writing a check. Online Banking is an Internet based service that provides a safe and convenient way for making contributions or paying bills. Most banks offer this service to their customers. The enclosed flyer gives a good explanation of both of these options and tells us how to sign up for them. Several hundred parish families (including me) are already using these opportunities and finding them convenient and helpful. Our contributions to Saint Margaret are part of the living of our faith. I very much appreciate your financial support and want you to know that it makes a real difference in our providing nourishing celebrations of the Eucharist and the other sacraments and other opportunities for prayer, excellent faith formation for people of all ages, effective outreach into the local community especially for those in crisis, caring ministry in times of personal need, and on it goes. Your financial gifts, like your gifts of time and talent, enable Saint Margaret to make the Lord visible in our community. They enable us to be an instrument of God and a vehicle of God’s love. Thank you and Happy Summer!

Marriage Moments
“Couples with two jobs, two cars and two kids say they’re often too tired, too stressed and too bored when they do manage to find one-on-one time.” (Dr. John Friel) If this sounds familiar do you have the courage to simplify your life? Just don’t get rid of the kids.

Information About Online Banking

What is Online Banking?
Online banking is an Internet-based service that provides a safe and convenient way to do your banking and pay your bills online. Most banks offer online banking and online bill pay services to their customers.

How does Online Banking work?
In most cases, the bill pay option of online banking enables you to have your bill payments sent from your bank account to virtually anyone you would normally pay with a check, including your offertory contribution to Saint Margaret.

What are the advantages?
Online bill paying allows you to make your offertory contributions without writing checks or having to remember envelopes. You never have to worry about missing a contribution when you are unable to attend Mass because of weather, vacation or sickness. You can even schedule recurring payments that will automatically be paid at any interval you designate. Consult your financial institution for the specific details of their online banking procedures.

How much does it cost?
Online banking is typically a free service offered by banks to their account holding customers. In most cases, the online bill pay option is also free. Contact your financial institution for other account-related fees that may still apply.

Will I still receive envelopes?
Yes, you will still receive envelopes. Many parishioners choose to place their empty envelope in the collection basket as a visible sign of giving to the Lord’s work.

Is Online Bill Payment safe?
Yes! Banks use several methods to protect your information and ensure the security of your transactions. You initiate all transactions to be carried out by your financial institution. Today, Saint Margaret receives regular payments from close to 50 parishioners who use online bill pay options through their banks.

How can I sign up for Online Banking?
Contact your financial institution for instructions on how to enroll in their online banking and bill paying services. For additional information on contributing to Saint Margaret, please call Michele Kogler in the parish Development Office at 410-838-6969.

Dinner Makes A Difference

Research by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University has consistently found that the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. The National Center on Addictions and Substance Abuse at Columbia University’s Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children is a national movement that reminds parents that what your kids really want at the dinner table is YOU!

Question of the week:  God does not always lead us with clear signs.
1. What are some ways to keep yourself ready to respond when
God speaks through the poor, rejected, or other ways?
2.  How do you pay attention on a daily basis to the call of God?

An Independence Day Blessing

Heavenly God, we give you thanks for this celebration of our independence. We are reminded on this day of the freedom you seek for all people to enjoy. Help us to grow in deeper appreciation of this freedom and the responsibility that accompanies it. Lord, bless every brave man and woman who has worked in pursuit of this liberty. As we gather with family and friends this holiday weekend, keep us safe in all our celebrations. We praise you for all you have bestowed upon us in being called your sons and daughters.

In case you saw a stray parrot, jaguar or even a monkey in your neighborhood this week, you were not mistaken. This week the "Son Quest Rainforest" came to or parish as we enjoyed our annual Vacation Bible School. Under the wonderful leadership of Marge Toilo and assisted by Kim O'Brien, over 140 children enjoyed quite an adventure!  We pretended to be all sorts of animals like frogs, lizards, butterflies and snakes. The week consisted of fun games and songs, crafts and interactive learning time assisting our campers in learning about God. Each day the children learned about God's love for them and how they can share that love with their families, friends and even those boys and girls they don't get along with. Most of all, this rainforest adventure taught our young people that they can rely on God no matter what!
However, this week was not just special because we were privileged to have such a

large number of campers. It also was awesome because of the countless volunteers that made this week possible. Numerous parents gave of their time to help with the activities. Many young people also gave of their vacation time from school to help as well. One of the most special aspects of this week was to see a significant number of our recent Confirmation class assist. The Holy Spirit truly has been confirmed in their lives!
This Vacation Bible School would not have been a success without the sacrifice of over 140 parents, grandparents and friends who day after day brought our campers to the Rainforest. Juggling sports schedules and many other commitments, these wonderful adults made learning about God a priority for these boys and girls! What an incredible witness to our parish community! Finally, we have only one problem to report and we could really use your help. We were able to collect all our rainforest animals at the end of the week except an alligator and one toucan. If you find either of these "friends" please return them to Ms. Marge's office. You didn't have to be at camp this week to still have fun with your imagination ...

From Father Mike
Dear Friends,

Pastoral Council elections were held on the first weekend of June.  I wish to thank all seven of the candidates who agreed to run for election. All of these are very active parishioners of Saint Margaret and offer much expertise and commitment to the work of leading this faith community. I also wish to thank all of you who took the time to cast ballots. We received slightly over 1,300 ballots. That is excellent. I realize that doing this during the weekend Masses slightly interrupts the flow of the liturgy. However, it is also a living expression of the faith we are celebrating and professing at Mass.

Our  Pastoral Council has twelve members: nine elected by the parish at large and three appointed by the pastor. The term of office for all members is three years and terms are staggered so that each year four seats turn over – three elected members and one appointed member. New terms become effective on July 1.

The bulletin of June 13 reported on the results of the election. The candidates receiving the three highest numbers of votes are: Greg Yantz, Ann Brecht-Castle, and Ken Dawson. All three accepted election. The candidate with the fourth highest number of votes was Dan Berardi. I have asked Dan to be my appointee and he has accepted. The other three parishioners who ran for election are involved in our mission in other very helpful ways. I am also grateful to those leaving the Council at this time: Bob Bugle, Christine Flenner, and Traude Lyon.

I take our Pastoral Council seriously.
The Council is an excellent forum for communication, the sharing of ideas, and the development of ministerial goals and policies for the parish. I enjoy consulting with the Council on every significant direction for our parish. I have found our Council to be quite representative of the people of the parish, informed about faith and community matters, and committed to making our ministry as effective as possible. This approach makes our meetings energizing and life-giving.

We are now intending to have one Mass each weekend with contemporary music. Our intention is have this at the 11:00 am Mass at the Callahan Center beginning September 19. There is some excellent contemporary church music available from various resources. We will secure the necessary licenses for this and have the songs printed on the worship aid. Jeff Winfield, our assistant Music Director, will be leading this. We already have some talented youth assisting, usually at the 9:30 am Mass at the Callahan Center. We want to expand this and are looking for instrumentalists and vocalists. Please contact Michael Britt, our Director of Music, or Jeff Winfield here at the parish office if you are interested. Our intent is to design this Mass with our youth and young adults in mind, although my experience is that this type of music appeals to people of all ages. I have consulted on this direction, but remain open to hearing your comments about this.

On another front, I want to give you an update on the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. The overall goal for the Appeal this year is $8.5 million. Saint Margaret’s target was $215,000. I am pleased to report that as of the June17 report from the Archdiocese, Saint Margaret has contributed or pledged a total of $192,198. This represents 89% of our goal and is $17,496 or 10% more than we contributed last year. There are 1,016 individuals or families from our parish who have made gifts. Please remember that 25% of what we give comes back to Saint Margaret for needs that we designate. This means that as of now, $48,049 will return to us.  As we shared in the Appeal materials, we have decided to allocate this in three equal portions of $16,016 each to: our Youth Ministry Program, Saint Anthony Parish in northeast Baltimore which we have adopted as a partner parish, and Tuition Assistance for parish children attending our school. The Archdiocese will also provide some additional matching funds for the amount we are allocating to tuition assistance. Obviously, if more gifts are still given, the above amounts will all increase. I thank all of you who have contributed to the Appeal. I also know that Archbishop O’Brien is very grateful.

Happy Summer!

                         Father Mike

Marriage Moments
“I love you” are such easy words to say. The almost automatic reply is, “I love you too.” But words can sound cheap if too often said casually. Say “I love you,” once, with heart, to your spouse today.

Sponsor Couple Marriage Preparation To better assist couples in preparing for marriage, we are seeking the assistance of married couples of our parish who are willing to be trained to be “sponsors” for engaged couples. We are asking for all married couples to consider serving in this important ministry. Come learn how on Saturday, July 17 at 9:30 am to Sunday, July 18 at 1:00 pm. Cost: $150 (deposit $50). Guided by Msgr. Nicholas Amato at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, 1525 Marriottsville Rd, Marriottsville MD. To register, please call 410-442-1320 or visit www.BonSecoursSpiritualCenter.org

Room Mothers/ Coordinators
Crucial to the successful operation of both classroom and school activities are Room Mothers and Room Mother Coordinators. While responsibilities vary depending on the grade level, these volunteers work behind the scenes to help teachers and administrators host Open Houses, coordinate picnics, field trips, class parties, parent conferences and lunch duty. What a blessing a good room mother is to a teacher! The entire school community gratefully acknowledges the valuable contribution made by these dedicated school parents.

Room Mother Coordinators:
Mary Ruff, Joann Kopp, Theresa Waskiewicz, and Lanie Watson. Room Mothers: Janet Rittershofer, Courtnee Cirri, Kim Zarzycki, Katie Neville, Brandy Caldwell, Allyson Hill, Carla Howard, Karen Bowes, Maureen Petrino, Marci Hare, Becky Niehaus, Melissa Burns, Jen Patrick, Lisa Exter, Susie Barnd, Paula Isoldi, Monica Wright, Lisa Sheehan, Christine Buontempo, Holly Klink, Donna Bentman, Jen Cowan, Kathy Ewers, Jen Kaufman, Nancy Smith, Kim Petro, Lisa McDermott, Kathy Weldon, Susan Hentz, Michelle Smoot, Libby Plunkett, Mary Nunnally and Tina Carson.

Hot Lunch is the best day of the week for those who pack lunches. We are grateful to the HSA; the faithful volunteers who sort, count, and deliver the lunches; and to the parents who count and tally the lunch orders. Student Art Room Helpers
These students arrive early on art days to help the art teachers with the set-up of tables, chairs, and art supplies. Because many groups use this area, Mrs. Hart relies on her student art helpers to get everything ready in time for the day’s classes. Thank you to Grace Chubb, Thomas Green, Mary Larson, Delaney Link, Mason Loskot, Caleb Olsen and Mary Olsen.

From the Admissions Office
We have immediate openings in an exciting new preschool class. Our Tuesday/Thursday afternoon class will be a combination of three- year-old and four-year-old children.  A small class size and our preschool teacher’s outstanding ability to differentiate activities based on a child’s developmental level will make this program successful. Please help us by telling your friends and neighbors. We still have limited openings in our elementary and middle school. Contact Mrs. Cecilia Pleiss for more information, 410-879-1113, ext. 150 or cpleiss@smsch.org.

Services for Infants and Children

In an effort to accommodate parents with infants and young children, our parish provides the following service;
•   Baby changing stations are located in the handicap accessible restrooms
•   Nursery service for children up to 3 years of age is provided in the Preschool building (next to the church) during the 9:00 am and 10:30 am Masses at Saint Margaret and during the 9:30 and 11:00 am Masses at the Callahan Center at Saint Mary Magdalen.
•   The sound system extends into the cry room and lobby area for parents when their little ones need a “breather”.

The Year of the Priest - A Reflection

This is not your parents' priesthood!
I begin my reflection after serving 11 years as a priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, thinking back to my early school days with a few memories of change over the years. I grew up in the town of Frostburg in the 1950s before Vatican II and attended St. Michael parish and school. At the time, there were three priests there, and there always seemed to be one around, whether it was in school, on the ball fields and playgrounds, at CYO functions and or in the rectory.

Priests made house calls for First Fridays, hospital calls simply to visit people and were present for just about everything else. Our parish, like many, had a number of priests who were “sons of the parish” and were always good role models for me. Our parish was very proud of its many vocations, and I added to those numbers in 1999 after retiring from the Navy.

After Vatican II, I remember the many changes that were made not only in the Liturgy, but also in the increased mission of the laity. We had lectors in addition to the altar servers, and I remember being one of the first lectors in the parish. In addition, we instituted extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist and many other ways for people to get involved with their faith.

Over the years, I have noticed many changes in priestly duties, driven somewhat

by having to “do more with less.” In parishes where lay involvement was encouraged, the priest was able to gradually stand back and take a look at what he absolutely needed to do himself and what could reasonably be delegated to lay ministers. Some priests were able to do this better than others; it’s difficult to not think you have to do everything yourself and be all things to all people.

Like many others, I have struggled with this in my own personal priesthood. The bottom line is that we are all human and have our own needs. Today’s priesthood is even more complicated with fewer men to fill the assignments. Many priests are forced to serve two or more parishes, which is hard to do from a time-management and personal health standpoint.

What can you, the lay faithful, do to help this situation? Pray for vocations, encourage someone who you think would make a good priest or religious and last, but not least, be understanding of the humanness of the priest and don’t expect all things from him.

We here at Saint Margaret have been blessed with many priests, so we don’t see the situation of other parishes within our own diocese. However, I hope we realize that we, the Church, will have to do more with less. So when you’re asked to take on some ministry, say yes to help with God’s work and the work of your priests.

                              Father Doug

Parish Intention Book
We would like to keep your intentions in our prayer and Mass intentions. There is an intention book in both the church and the
Callahan Center for you to write your intentions. As a community of faith, we pray for those intentions at every Mass.

Music Notes
For more information contact Michael Britt at 410-879-2670, ext 136.

The current Mass setting that we are using is entitled “A Community Mass.” It was composed by Richard Proulx who died this past February at the age of 73. Proulx was a widely published composer of over 300 works. These compo- sitions include congregational music in every form, sacred and secular choral works, song cycles, two operas, instrumental and organ music. Proulx also served as consultant for numerous denominational hymnals. From 1980 to 1994, he served as Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Chicago.
Rehearsals for all choral and handbell ensembles have concluded for this season. Please see the bulletin during the summer months for the fall rehearsal schedule. The parish music ministry would also like to begin a handbell choir for youth. Please refer to the bulletin during the month of July about this ensemble. If you have questions about any of our choirs or our music ministry, please contact Michael Britt in the Music Office.

New Ministry - Youth Handbell Choir

The parish music ministry is looking to form a handbell choir for high school students.
Rehearsals and perform- ances will not conflict with those for the Teen Choir at Saint Mary Magdalen.

From Father Mike
Dear Friends,
On several occasions I have received via e-mail what are called Church Bloopers. These are, well, bloopers – slips in the way things are expressed that end up being very funny. They have appeared in the bulletins or pulpit announcements of other churches – certainly never here at Saint Margaret! Here are a few more that I have come across since the last time I shared some of these in one of my columns.

Church Bloopers

Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa, will be speaking tonight at Calvary Methodist. Come hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa.

There will be a Prayer and Fasting Conference next Saturday. The cost for attending the Fasting Conference includes meals.

Our youth basketball team is back in action Wednesday at 8:00 pm in the church gym. Come out and watch us kill Christ the King.

Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don’t forget your husbands.

The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been cancelled due to a conflict.

Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.

Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say “Hell” to someone who doesn’t care much about you.

Don’t let worry kill you off. Let the Church help.

For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.

The church will host an evening of fine dining, superb entertainment and gracious hostility.

Keep smiling! The peace and joy of the Lord be with you!

                         Father Mike

Sound Familiar?

You’re pulling into the church parking lot and realize you’ve forgotten your offering envelope. Or the collection starts and you’re fumbling in your purse for a pen and a check. It’s a race to the finish - will you make it by the time the basket comes your way?

De-stress your life with EFT - Electronic Funds Transfer! Fill out a simple form once, and never again worry about forgotten envelopes, a pen that doesn’t work or letting the weekly basket pass you by “just this once.” Your bank or credit union will transfer your offering to Saint Margaret weekly, bi-monthly or monthly - whatever works best for you. It’s automatically taken care of, and is the easiest way to fulfill your commitment to the church. Call Michele Kogler, parish Development Director at 410-879-2670 for more information.

Opening Our Emotions To God

So often we find ourselves at the mercy of our emotions. Jesus calls us to be transformed as whole persons, including our emotions, by being in God’s presence. Through specific practices, we can open ourselves to the gift of contemplation wherein our emotions are accepted and integrated into our life in God rather than denied or repressed.

Cecilia Pleiss for more information, 410-879-1113, ext 150 or cpleiss@smsch.org.

Parenting Pointers

Don’t think that you have to rush in with a solution to every problem your child has. Sometimes all that a child needs is your listening presence to figure out his or her own solution.

Readings For July 18, 2010
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time    We welcome Jesus into our lives.

Reading I:  Genesis 18: 1-10a
Please stop and stay with us.
Reading II: Colossians 1: 24-28
The mystery of Christ is your hope.
Gospel:  Luke 10: 38-42
Martha, Martha.

Question of the week:  The Gospel today invites us to balance work with prayer.
1.  In a typical week, how do you make time for prayer?
2.  How is work itself a way to pray?

Saint Margaret School Ready To Roll
On a hot July 4th, parade watchers cheered and waved as Saint Margaret School’s Centennial float proceeded down Main Street. Seated at old-fashioned desks at one end of the float were SMS students Savannah and Juliette Gray; Katie, Jeffrey, and Anthony Heidrick; Ava and Abby Barnd; and Gabrielle and Gwyneth Baikauskas. The girls wore white dresses and hair bows, while the boys wore knickers. SMS parent Tina Heidrick portrayed the teacher, in a full nun’s habit. On the other end of the float, students were seated at modern desks with laptop computers.

Seeing The Outsider With God's Eyes

“So far as I’m  con- cerned I should like you to kill some --- there are so many now, there is no room for A m e r i c a n s . ”
Those words, and the attitude behind them, shake us up. We’re more unset- tled to learn that they were written by Emily Dickinson, someone we picture as gentle, sensitive to nature and a person we wouldn’t expect to be so prejudiced against the Irish immigrants to Boston in the 1850s.

Last weekend’s Gospel reminded us that we don’t respect the life of another person when we let bias choke off lifegiving actions. People who knew God’s law by heart ignored someone whose life was saved only because

the Good Samaritan made a difference. The Samaritan responded instinctively. Was he recalling a time when someone else’s prejudice left him in need?

Giving up bias and getting along better with people doesn’t come easily. Five of the six pallbearers at Emily Dickinson’s funeral had been born in Ireland. However, her brother secured four honorary pallbearers from among his American born colleagues. It was 35 years after Emily Dickinson had expressed her prejudice, and even though she had changed, her brother had not.

We sang at Mass today for God to help us live with respect for people, to live our lives doing justice. The Good Samaritan showed us we can do it when the “reconciling might” of God’s love shows us the way.

Rehearsals and perform- ances will not conflict with those for the Teen Choir at Saint Mary Magdalen.

From Father Mike
Dear Friends,

Today I am extending four invitations
– at least I think that is the best word to capture what I am saying here.

First, we all know that there are some Catholics who have stopped attending Mass and practicing faith in the Catholic Church.
Some have simply stopped going to any church at all. Others have gone to some other church, usually another Christian church, perhaps one that is more evangelical or non- denominational. If you know anyone like this, please invite them to consider a conversation about faith with one of us here at Saint Margaret. In doing this, it is very important to approach these situations and persons non-judgmentally. Sometimes we can let the busyness of life interfere with our making time for worship. Sometimes we can allow scandal, especially that of recent decades in Catholicism, or the mistakes of Church leaders to turn us off and lead us elsewhere. Sometimes there are differences or disagreements over certain points of faith or Church practice.

Whatever the case may be, I am very interested in speaking with anyone who has completely or virtually left our Church. I guarantee you and them complete respect and good conversation. We will walk the journey of life and faith together. Please invite anyone you know to contact us, or if it is okay with those persons, give us their names and phone numbers and we will contact them.

Second, I am especially concerned about Catholics who feel that they are no longer welcomed here because of a marriage situation.
Maybe all of us know some Catholics who were married in a ceremony not recognized by our Church. This might be due to a prior marriage and divorce of one or both parties. So often, persons in these situations feel unwanted by our Church. Once again, if you know anyone like this, please invite

them to consider conversation with one of us here at Saint Margaret. Again, I guarantee respectful, caring conversation. We want any such persons to know that we care about them and welcome them here.

Third, Saint Margaret has an excellent RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
Our RCIA experience is designed for anyone who is not a Catholic and is interested in learning more about Catholicism and maybe entering the Church, and also anyone who is or has in the past been a Catholic and wants a refresher on our faith. Our RCIA takes people where they are in their journey with the Lord and faith development and then we move  from there. We present our full Catholic tradition and we do so in a way that is personal and building of community relationships. So once again, if you know of anyone who is interested in exploring Catholicism or in getting refreshed in his or her faith, please invite that person to contact us here at Saint Margaret.

Fourth, I am interested in knowing if in our parish there are any former priests or men and women who had previously been in religious orders.
I know of two men in our parish who had once been active priests and then decided to leave the priesthood. I know also of some women who had been in religious life. Those whom I know of are active parishioners here, some involved in various ministries. I invite any others to contact me. I want to know you, make sure you know how welcome you are here, and see what I might do for you and your life of faith at this time.

Saint Margaret is a vibrant community of faith. I extend the above invitations because of that and with the hope of our always growing and becoming more alive in the Lord. Please respond to
these invitations by contacting especially Father John Cunningham, Father Doug Kenney, me, or anyone on the parish staff. You will be graciously and warmly welcomed.

Marriage Moments
Marriage is like owning a car. Preventive maintenance (enrich- ment, paying attention to the little grumblings, counseling before it’s broken) can save a big repair bill later. Besides it’s more fun to have your marriage run smoothly. Regular tune -ups are the secret.

Outreach Notes

Substance Abuse Ministry
Luke 1:79 “To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” If you or a loved one are struggling with substance issues, Saint Margaret offers the following support groups for help and guidance. AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meets Fridays at 7:00 pm and Sundays at 8:00 pm, NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meets on Sundays at 6:00 pm and FA (Families Anonymous) meets on Mondays at 7:00 pm. All meetings take place in the lower meeting room of the elementary school.

Project Rachel
The Church’s ministry operates as a network of professional clergy, licensed counselors and volunteers all trained to provide one-on-one spiritual and psychological support for those who are suffering from the trauma of abortion. Call 410-625-8491 or e-mail projectrachel @archbalt.org.

Prison Ministry
Please consider joining this powerful and meaningful ministry. We have two teams currently. One serves Communion on Sunday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 pm and the other serves in the Women’s Dorm on Fridays from 1:00 - 2:30 pm making rosaries and sharing about Mary as a role model. DO NOT BE AFRAID! You will receive training and can shadow current volunteers. You never have to go alone if you do not wish to do so. Come be a witness to your faith and touch some of our brothers and sisters who are so in need of hearing God’s word and seeing His face. Contact Jane O’Hara in the parish office for more information.

Cinderella’s Closet
Our closet continues to grow! For those of you who have not yet donated special occasion dresses, a bin marked “Cinderella’s Closet” has been placed in the entrance to the parish office for drop off. The parish office is open Monday - Thursday 9:00 am - 7:30 pm and Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Bereavement Team
                 Volunteers Needed!

No experience necessary. Training and shadowing takes place with current team members. You will be paired with another team member and be “on call” to serve at funerals once a month. The time commitment is about 1-1/2 hours. Your thoughtful service brings priceless support to families overcome with grief.

Delivery Date - July 24
Our delivery date is the 4th Saturday of each month. If you have spare time, we greatly appreciate your making a casserole to send to the hungry and homeless persons in Baltimore. Our-Daily-Bread casseroles may be brought to the parish office anytime between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Friday. Many thanks for your help.
Recipes are on the parish website [ HERE ].

Scam Alert!
A parishioner recently received a prank phone call stating that the individual was calling on behalf of the Archdiocese requesting a donation to the Harford County Fuel Fund.  As a parish, we do support individuals struggling with utility bills and the Outreach Office works directly with the Fuel Fund. However, neither we or the Archdiocese EVER solicit donations to the Harford County Fuel Fund.

Looking To Keep the Kids Busy?
In addition to all the summer fun, you may want to include an evening of family Bible study and scripture sharing. If you are interested, contact Marie Dekowski to explore getting several families together and for  some family-friendly resources.

Do Your Children Need Sacraments?
Sessions are available for both children and teens that are new to the Catholic Church. The sessions will include an overview of basic beliefs and teachings of the Catholic Church as well as sacramental preparation. For more information, please contact Marie Dekowski at 410-879-2670, ext. 126 or e-mail mdekowski@stmargaret.org

SMS Celebrates Century of Service
These current students were represented by Collin Zamerski, Heather Euler, Timothy Yantz, and Olivia, Thomas, and Isabella Askey. Completing the modern scenario were Jane Dean, former SMS teacher and principal, and recent graduate Matthew Vierheller, dressed as a priest.

Other participants were: school board member Susan Thomey and art teacher Peggy Hart, who carried the centennial banner; flag holder Maureen Yantz; float driver Owen Smith, alum and school parent; and spotter David Thomey, former school parent.

The colorful float, decorated with hundreds of white, blue, and green tissue flowers and a large brown tissue paper cross, proudly proclaimed the school’s 100 years of scholarship and service to the community. Creating the beautiful float involved the efforts of many volunteers under the guidance of float coordinator Elise Smith, alumni parent. Congratulations and thanks to all our volunteers for a job well done! A special thanks to Jim and Germaine Vadas, school grandparents, for the use of their barn during the building of the float.

Every day is worth your
undivided attention.

We have immediate openings in an exciting new preschool class. Our Tuesday/Thursday afternoon class will be a combination of three-year-old and four-year-old children.

Parenting Pointers

“We are responsible for the process we use in parenting, not the outcome. Our children have free will and can choose their own paths, even destructive ones. We can guide, but we can’t control. Sometimes all we can do is pray.”

God made you alive with Christ - he has forgiven all your sins.

Hunger Doesn’t Go On Vacation

Please continue to bring in tabbed canned goods, non- perishable food items and gift certificates to Mass each weekend. This is a continuous ministry to the needy of Harford County. The County Food Bank picks them up every Monday for those in Harford County that are less fortunate. Please place food items at the entrance of the church or Callahan Center and place gift certificates in the collection. You may also drop off items at the parish office. Thank you for helping with this ministry!

Goodbye?  Not just yet . . .

Over the past 14 months that I have been here, I have experienced a variety of emotions. From great joy as we celebrated fun and joyful moments in church and in the school, to feelings of nervousness in preaching. From experiences of sadness at funerals to intense moments of great faith that were evident on the weekend Confirmation retreats. All were powerful emotions that I never felt in such a way before. Yet the overarching feeling that permeated everything this wonderful year was a sense of melancholy as I realized July 2010 would come so quickly and I would be leaving Saint Margaret. How awesome this community had been, but how soon I would need to move on…

However, it is with great excitement that I am thrilled to announce that I have been assigned to return to Saint Margaret on weekends during my next academic year! Although I will not be able to be as involved in the parish now that I will be a full-time student again, I will still be able to minister to this parish in a substantial way.

Even though as a seminarian my role role was to minister to you, I would be remiss if I did not mention how all of you have  ministered to me. Starting with Fr. Mike…I could not have asked for a better mentor. Fr. Marty, Fr. John and Fr. Doug also offered so much to me in teaching me what priesthood is all about. All four priests taught me, not just in word, but by example as well, how to be a good and humble priest. The parishioners of Saint Margaret ministered to me by inviting me into your lives. Just saying hello on the weekend to sharing a meal together…your sincerity and love for God taught me so much.

Finally, the truest blessings of this year for me have been the children. The parish school children and those in Faith Formation ministered to me through their childlike enthusiasm and love for God. Although we were not successful in convincing Fr. Mike to let me get that dog, we still had tons of fun.

So… for now… it’s not goodbye, but rather thank you, that you will hear from me. As we grow together in faith, let us promise to pray for each other this next year. I look forward to this upcoming year with all of you and ask for your continued prayers as I approach deaconate, next spring, God willing!

Thank You For The Bulletins!
Many of you have brought copies of the bulletins from churches that you visited while on vacation. It is always interesting to see what programs other parishes are using and how they are ministering to their parishioners. Thank you for sharing. Please continue to send in the bulletins as you travel.

Music Notes

For more information contact Michael Britt
at 410-879-2670, ext 136.

We extend our sincere thanks to Debra Jones, guitar and Rob Basler, bass guitar for sharing their talent at the 10:30 am Mass.

Rehearsals for all choral and handbell ensembles have concluded for this season. Please see the bulletin during the summer months for the fall rehearsal schedule. The parish music ministry would also like to begin a handbell choir for youth. Please refer to the bulletins during the month of July about this ensemble. If you have questions about any of our choirs or our music ministry, please contact Michael Britt in the Music Office.

New Ministry - Youth Handbell Choir

The parish music ministry is looking to form a handbell choir for high school students.
Rehearsals and performances will not conflict with those for the Teen Choir at Saint Mary Magdalen.

From Father Mike
Dear Friends,
This weekend marks the conclusion of the Pastoral Year for Seminarian Steven Roth.
In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, after applicants are accepted as candidates for the priesthood, they normally spend one year as a pre-theology experience. Candidates have completed their college degree, but usually require some additional pre-requisite courses before beginning theological studies and almost always benefit from an introduction into prayer and spirituality. This is the pre-theology year. Then candidates begin their four-year program of formal theological study. The Archdiocese of Baltimore interrupts the studies after two years and has all seminarians do a “Pastoral Year.”  This is a year of ministry experience in a parish under the guidance of a priest supervisor, usually the pastor. That is what Steven Roth has been doing here at Saint Margaret since June 2009.

Steven has had a wide variety of experiences.
He has assisted regularly at Mass and so many of you have commented to me on how good his homilies are. In fact, I have told Steven that the quality of his homilies far exceeds what I would expect of him at this level of his formation and is actually at ordination level already. Steven has often visited the sick, led wake services, and even preached at funerals. Even today as I write this column, a man from the parish commended Steven to me on the care he gave his wife who died several months ago. Steven has been especially effective in ministry to our children and youth, for example, in doing creative projects with the children in the school and religious ed program and in helping with the Confirmation retreats. He has also given enlightening and inspiring presentations in the RCIA and other adult faith opportunities. He has learned much by attending numerous meetings of the Pastoral Council, Liturgy, Finance, Development, Facilities and other committees, etc. There are other things I could mention, but I would say in general that Steven set out to experience this year the full life and ministry of a priest as a helpful discernment of his vocation. He has accomplished this

wonderfully and I believe he concludes this year with greater clarity and conviction about his calling to the priesthood. Steven’s last days here fulltime are this weekend. After a seminarians’ retreat this coming week, he will have several weeks break and then return to Saint Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore for his third year of theology. The schedule calls for Steven to be ordained to the diaconate next May, at the end of this third year of theology, and finally ordained to the priesthood in June 2012 after the fourth year of theology.

During this coming year, Steven along with the other seminarians at Saint Mary’s will be assigned to a parish for eight to ten hours a week of ministry experience.
I am pleased to say that Steven will be one of three or four seminarians assigned to Saint Margaret. So, happily, we do not have to say good-bye to him. However, his ministry here will be very defined. Steven will function as overall coordinator of parish liturgy. This will include relating to a newly formed Worship and Prayer Committee and the Liturgy Resource Committee. His work will center especially on education in liturgy for these groups and the parish in general. It will be most important that I as supervisor insist on our keeping this very specific focus to Steven’s ministry. He will not be available for the many other ministries that he did this past year. I am asking the staff, the Pastoral Council, and all of us to be alert to this. The Seminary and the Archdiocese very much want him to be able to give himself again to his studies which are so important. For that to happen, his continued ministerial experience must be focused and limited. Please understand this and please refrain from any requests of Steven outside of the liturgical area.

On behalf of all of us, I thank Steven for all that he gave us this past year and wish him well as he continues his preparation for the priesthood.
May we as a parish community keep him in our prayer and may we also pray for vocations to the priesthood. We very much need more priests and I will be commenting on that in my column within the next several weeks.

Substance Abuse Ministry
One of the most debilitating outcomes for the “affected” as a result of a loved one’s addiction can be resentment. If in your  heart or in your mind you can find any “resentment” as he hung upon the cross? “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Please consider coming to the Families Anonymous support group on Monday evenings at 7:00 pm in the lower meeting room of the Elementary School. All meetings are strictly confidential. This group is here specifically to guide and support loved ones of those caught in addiction.

Mason-Dixon Ready2Learn Program

A Special Thank You
Dear Friends,
Time management experts tell us we need to stay focused on our next task, sometimes asking ourselves, “What is the most important thing I can do right now?”

It’s a great question, and when we consider creating a culture of life in the midst of political and economic challenges, perhaps we need to remember that simple sentiment: What is the most important thing I can do right now?

In your case, you know the answer. Supporting this ministry won’t change a vote in Washington, and it won’t change the make-up of the Supreme Court. However, right now your support does something quite simple: When a woman comes in our door weighing her options, you -- by your gift - are empowering her to choose life. While legislation and public decisions are important, no politician - and no Supreme Court justice - can give women and men the tools to choose life. Yet, you’ve done that.

Thank you. You’re changing the culture right now, and we appreciate you.
             Sincerely,
                 Carol Maglov
                 Birthright Director

Habitat for Humanity
Saint Margaret will be participating in two builds this fall – September 11 and September 18. The time commitment is approximately 8:00 am - 3:30 pm. You must be 16 years of age to participate in this service opportunity. If interested in volunteering, please contact Jane O’Hara in the Parish Office. Teams are now being formed, and space is limited.

As in our homes when we’re on vacation, the parish bills still come in and salaries still have to be paid. Please remember to turn in your offertory envelopes either before or after summer vacation.

Travelers looking for Mass times - go to www.Masstimes.org or call 1-410-676-6000 for information about churches and Mass times in areas you are visiting.

The sessions will include an overview of basic beliefs and teachings of the Catholic Church, as well as sacramental preparation. For more information, please contact Marie Dekowski at 410-879-2670, ext 126 or e-mail mdekowski@stmargaret.org

Help us spread the word that Saint Margaret School currently is accepting applications
for the 2010-2011 school year. We still have available spaces for next school year particularly in 1st , 2nd , and 3rd grades. There are short wait lists or limited openings at other grade levels.

We have immediate openings in an exciting new preschool class. Our Tuesday/Thursday  afternoon class will be a combination of three-year-old and four-year-old children. A small class size and our preschool teacher’s outstanding ability to differentiate activities based on a child’s developmental level will make this program successful. Interested parents should call or e-mail Admissions Director Cecilia Pleiss 410-879-1113 or cpleiss@smsch.org to find out grade-specific information.
