PASTORAL COUNCIL

The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body sharing in responsibility for the pastoral care of the Parish in collaboration with the pastor and staff. The Pastoral Council consists of three appointed members and nine members elected at large for three-year terms.

Mardi Gras Pancake Supper - Parishioners and families are invited to attend our version of Fat Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday) to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Activities for the children include A Farewell to Alleluia and parade. Marie Dekowski 410 879-2670, ext 126.  

Lenten Suppers

St. Nicholas Luncheon
gathers parish families for a visit with St. Nicholas that includes games, crafts, photographs with St. Nick and lunch.

Hanging of the Greens
  is a family event where all are invited to transform the Church and Mission from the season of Advent to Christmas. There will be lots of decorating with lights, trees and flowers, and of course, punch and cookies.

Baptismal Garment Sewing. During the Rite of Infant Baptism a white garment is placed on the baby to symbolize they are clothed in a new life – the life of Christ. It is a tradition in our parish that these garments are made by willing parishioners. There are two ways you can help. We need individuals who are willing to cut them out from a pattern and individuals who are willing to do the sewing OR you can join our sewing team that meets every other month for fellowship and sewing. The Knitters’ Group (Prayer Shawl Ministry) is made up of women who come together to knit or crochet shawls or lap robes for persons in need. These lovely hand-made items are presently being donated to nursing homes and to veterans’ facilities. Since the group started in October 2006, over 50 shawls and lap robes have been given to grateful recipients. The group meets weekly at Ewenique Yarns located at 130 N. Bond Street (Suite 103), Bel Air; Thursday, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. If you do not knit or crochet, but would like to learn, instructions are provided – the stitch used to make a shawl is simple and can be picked up easily.

New Parishioner Mentoring Program it is our heartfelt wish that all new parishioners are welcomed to our parish family. The Mentoring Program pairs new parishioners with trained mentors who assist our new members to settling into parish life.

EDUCATION

The Mission Priority Statement for Education, encompassing Religious Education, Youth Ministry, Adult Faith Formation and St. Margaret School is to:

The Education Committee oversees and supports the educational efforts of the Parish through St. Margaret School , the Department of Religious Education, Youth and Young Adult Ministry and Adult Faith Formation. The committee meets the first Monday of the month from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the Parish Office.

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

The Infant Baptism Program provides support to parents in understanding their important role in educating their children in our Catholic faith tradition. Monthly, a one-hour interactive session is presented to new parents on the history of Baptism, the role and selection of Godparents, the Church’s role and the nature of this joyous celebration.

The First Eucharist Program provides parents with the resources to catechize (teach) their children on the reception of Eucharist. A parent gathering is held annually to give parents the opportunity to explore their understanding of this sacrament and how it relates to bringing their children to the table for the first time.

The First Reconciliation Program like the First Eucharist Program, parents are the catechists (teachers) for their children’s reception of this blessed sacrament unique to our Catholic faith. Parent Seminars are held in the Fall to prepare children to celebrate during Lent.

The Adult Confirmation Program is for adults who have been Baptized, have received the sacrament of Eucharist and now desire to be Confirmed.  Trained catechists help prepare those seeking confirmation. Opportunities for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation occur several times throughout the year here at our Parish and at Archdiocesan celebrations.

Youth Confirmation Program fosters the total personal and spiritual growth of our youth and assists them in journeying to an ownership of the Catholic faith tradition. Invitations and enrollment forms are mailed in December to students registered in our 10th grade Religious Education program as well as those in area Catholic high schools registered in our Parish. The first Confirmation gathering is in January of 10th grade. The Sacrament is celebrated in the Fall of 11th grade. Seminars, liturgies, small group catechesis, a retreat, a Pilgrimage to Baltimore and service are components of Confirmation preparation.

The Marriage Preparation Program. Fully trained Sponsor Couples assist engaged couples in discovering those areas of strength and uniqueness in their relationship upon which they can build a lasting, loving marriage. The engaged couple meets in the home of their Sponsor Couple approximately four times.

Holy Orders
is a sacrament celebrated with men who feel called by God to service in the Church as priests or permanent deacons. All those who would like to explore the possibility of serving God and the church as an ordained minister should contact the parish office and request to speak with one of our priests or permanent deacons.

The Anointing of the Sick is for anyone facing a serious illness that would like to pray for God’s healing presence in their lives. All who are preparing for surgery, those with major changes in their health, and those who have just learned about a major health issue can come to seek this sacrament. The sacrament is celebrated after every weekend mass and with individual priests by appointment.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

In Preschool/Kindergarten Sunday school classes children ages 3, 4, and 5 increase their awareness of God through active learning sessions that include prayer, stories, songs, crafts and Scripture. Classes meet for one hour at 9:00 am and 10:30 am each Sunday from early October until Easter time.

In Elementary Religious Education (Kindergarten through Grade Five) children learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Catechists implement faith sharing through prayer and Scripture stories and children learn Catholic tradition and doctrine. Wednesday sessions are held one hour each week from mid-September until Easter time at 4:30-5:30 pm and 7:15-8:15 pm. First grade classes also take place on Sunday mornings during the 9:00 am and 10:30 am Masses.

Vacation Bible Camp is an annual summer program lasting one week that nurtures a child’s relationship with God in a relaxed atmosphere through music, crafts, recreation and Bible Stories. Students move from station to station where music, craft, recreation and snack coordinators direct the activities. Vacation Bible Camp is in session from 9:15 am to 12:15 pm, early summer.

The Nursery provides supervision for children up to three years old during the 9:00 am and 10:30 am Masses at St. Margaret and during the 9:30 am and 11:00 am Masses at St. Mary Magdalen.  YOUTH & YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

Middle & High School Religious Education This is a multi-faceted program of Catechesis that includes mini-courses, retreats, rallies, service projects and prayer experiences. All are done in the context of Youth Ministry and are provided to meet the needs of this age group. Parents/Teen Seminars are held periodically for both the Middle and High School Programs. Middle School classes meet eight times a semester for two-hour sessions with a choice of attending every other week on Tuesday nights or weekly finishing in November on Wednesday nights. High School classes meet five times a semester for a two hour session and once a semester for a three hour General Assembly with a choice to attend either on a Sunday or a Tuesday evening. All Middle and High School sessions include a snack/pizza break for socialization and community building. Two different Home Study options are also offered to both Middle and High School families who prefer to share catechesis together as part of the domestic church.

Family Home Study Religious Education primarily provides support to parents in understanding their important role in educating their children in our Catholic faith tradition. Educational materials and various resources are supplied to those families enrolled in this program. Four lively and informative presentations a year validate the parents’ teachings.

S.I.G.N. (Serving in God’s Name) The SIGN Program is a program provided through High School Religious Education to help enable our high school youth to        learn about and name their Spiritual Gifts in order that they might define for themselves their “Servant Profile.”  The purpose of the catechesis is to help our youth find their “ministry connection” here at St. Margaret. The SIGN program includes on-campus as well as off-campus outreach opportunities such as nursing home visits, soup kitchen, Rebuilding Together.

St. Margaret Middle School Campus Ministry
provides a spiritual, pastoral care, catechetical and community building presence at St. Margaret Middle School . The Campus Minister also assists in connecting St. Margaret Middle School youth with all other middle school youth in the community who do not attend our school through the Middle School Youth Group and Youth Group activities.

High School Youth Group
provides opportunities for High School youth to gather periodically for socialization, outreach, community building and the development of adolescent spirituality. It strives to foster for High School youth responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the faith community. SIGN on and off campus service projects and the Bel Air Bash – those interested in music provide an ongoing connection for interested youth.

Young Adult Ministry Young Adults of St. Margaret and St. Mary Magdalen identify themselves as a vital part of the Parish family through spirituality,
service and socialization. Young Adult Ministry strives to foster a comprehensive ministry to young adults of our Parish community as the needs are identified in the Parish and to recognize and respond to the continued growth and ever changing needs of our young adult community with particular focus on 18-25 year olds. It also provides a contact point for young adults moving into our Parish to help them feel welcome and treasured as part of our Parish family.

 ADULT FAITH FORMATION

Bible Study, the Little Rock Scripture Study Series, is used to increase the participant’s knowledge of scripture and to enrich their spirituality through reflective prayer, study and group   discussion. Several different sessions are offered a year. Studies are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Wednesday mornings from 10:00 to 11:30 am.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a process of conversion to bring both the baptized and the un-baptized person into the communal life of the Church. It is divided into four continuous stages that correspond to a candidate’s progress in Christian formation. As a parish community event its parishioners become the primary ministers to the new Catholics. The talents of many people are needed for the success of this process: sponsors, catechists, spiritual advisors, social justice ministers and hospitality ministers.

The Knights of Columbus is a family, fraternal, service organization dedicated to the Catholic Church and its principles. It is the largest lay organization in the Catholic Church. It consists of more than 12,500 councils and over 1.75 million members throughout the world. His Holiness, the late Pope John Paul II called the Order, “My strong right arm of the Church.”  He thanked the Knights on many occasions for their unfailing commitment to the Church and her principles. Pope Benedict XVI echoes these same sentiments. President George W. Bush hailed the Knights for the essential role they play in the healing of the nation through its charitable works in times of disasters and also for their many civic programs. Today, more than ever, the world needs a few more Knights to carry on this necessary work. Please consider joining us.

LITURGY

The Mission Priority Statement for Liturgy is to celebrate weekly community Eucharist that is the source of our parish sacramental life, is welcoming, encourages active participation in ministries, and provides an experience of communion that deepens our relationship with Jesus Christ and one another.

The Liturgy Committee oversees the weekend and other liturgies and promotes the reverence for the real presence in the Eucharist.

Weekend Liturgy

 MUSIC

Our Parish Music Ministry offers opportunities for Adults, Children and Teens to enhance the worship life of the parish through our choral and instrumental ensembles: Adult, Teen, Children, Cherub and Hand bell Choirs.

Cantors are used at all liturgies to lead the congregation in hymns and sung responses.

We also welcome those who are proficient instrumentalists to share their talents at various liturgies throughout the year.

Concerts and special programs are scheduled during the year which not only utilizes the talent of our parish, but feature guest artists and choral/instrumental ensembles as well.

On October 26th at 3:00 pm in the Church, we will feature the silent film classic, “The Phantom of the Opera” which will be accompanied on the Moller Pipe Organ by our Music Director.

provides hosting and set-up of hospitality after the funeral in the Adult Education Center .

Cooperative Food Ministry - Eight area churches feed the needy and the homeless. Every Monday night a different church prepares and serves 150-200 people at Calvary Baptist Church at 206 Courtland Place . Food preparation for our assigned week begins at 3:30 pm; dinner is served at 6:00 pm. Drivers are needed to deliver meals to those who are unable to attend due to health or transportation problems.

provides hospital visits to Catholics from St. Margaret’s and neighboring parishes at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.

Birthright Pregnancy Resource Center
offers practical help to anyone facing a crisis pregnancy with ongoing support, education, referrals, and material assistance in a friendly atmosphere. We also talk to youth groups and clubs about God’s plan for sex staying within the boundaries of marriage.

Substance Abuse Team
meets the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm . The team provides education, awareness, support and referrals to families and individuals coping with issues surrounding substance abuse.

Harford Habitat for Humanity, Inc. (HHH)
is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry located in Harford County, Maryland. HHH was chartered by Habitat for Humanity International in 1994 and is one of more than 2000 affiliates (community group) worldwide. It is the vision of this charter to eliminate sub-standard housing for economically disadvantaged families in Harford County through partnership with the community.

Cottage Thrift Shop
is a joint ministry of St. Margaret Parish and Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Volunteers collect, sort and assist in the shop, which provides clothing and miscellaneous articles to needy clients at a modest cost, or as a donation.

Welcome One Shelter
provides year round transitional housing to homeless individuals. St. Margaret Parish volunteers on the 29th of each month. Volunteers help cook, drive, and stay overnight once a month.

Legion of Mary
provides spiritual growth for members and outreach to the sick and homebound. Our Lady of the Snows Presidium meets Friday afternoons, 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm in the Adult Education Center.

Our Daily Bread Casseroles
... Beef stew casseroles are made by our parishioners in their homes, frozen and then dropped off to the St. Margaret parish office or school kitchen. Casserole pans and recipes can be found in the Usher’s Room in the Church and Mission (recipe also found on parish homepage website [click HERE ]

Just Singles
(Formerly Single Again) provides practical, social and spiritual support to the single, separated, divorced and widowed. Meet on the 2nd Friday of every month. Seminars are available to help singles adjust to the changes in their circumstances. Also, social activities are held at various times throughout the year.

Angel Babies

Hispanic Ministry
A Spanish Mass is celebrated on Saturday evening at 7:30 pm in St. Margaret Chapel. All are welcome. Individuals wishing to receive sacraments in a Spanish Liturgy may do so.

 STEWARDSHIP

The Mission Priority Statement for Stewardship to fulfill the visions for Liturgy, Outreach, Education and Facilities Maintenance by identifying and linking the needs of all parishioners and raising necessary resources to fulfill them. Stewardship is served by the Development Team consisting of the Development Committee, Finance Committee, and Facilities Committee. The team manages time, talent and treasure programs.

DEVELOPMENT

The Parish Development Committee provides recommendations for parish development programs for planning, stewardship, welcoming, planned giving and Communications to the Pastor and coordinates Parish and School development programs. Committee and sub-committees meet bi-monthly for two hours or as needed in conjunction with ongoing projects.

For the Protection of Children & Youth

In order to comply with the
Archdiocese of Baltimore

“Application for Volunteer Services”
from all those wishing to
volunteer in ministry here at
